Abstract

ABSTRACT

Language is social phenomena, so that it is closely tied up with the social structure and value system of a society. This idea implies that any society uses its language in the way its social structure and value system operate in daily communication. A society will use its language differently from another society because every society has its own social structure, value system, habits, custom, etc.

Talking about languages used, this study takes Indonesian and Javanese language which are used together in the communication. It is code mixing because it occurs when conversantion use both languages together to the extent that they switch from one language to the other in course of a singe utterance.

The purpose of this study is to know how code mixing is used by Chinese traders in ‘Legi’ market Blitar and to know the reasons why they use code mixing in daily conversation.

In accordance with the objective, this research uses a descriptive qualitative research design. The data of the study are conversations between Chinese traders and buyers in ،Legi’ market Blitar. The data are analyzed descriptively and the result of the analysis is the description of a phenomenon.

In order to obtain the valid data, the researcher applies observation on the conversation among person, and interviews to obtain richer data.

The writer gives some suggestions of what should be done for future research in code mixing used by Chinese traders in ‘Legi, market Blitar. It is suggested to the researchers who would like to conduct a study on the same field of study, to focus on Chinese and Indonesian code mixings which are used by Chinese traders. The result of this research could be used as important information to provide more comprehensive description.
