Cohesion in Anton Chekhovs play The Boor

ABSTRACT

Cohesion means the unity or relation between sentences that exists in the text. Cohesion helps to create the text. Here, text may be written or spoken. Written text can be a script and spoken text, can be a dialogue or discussion. Therefore play is a kind of written text. Here, “The Boor” was selected.

This study aimed at answering the research questions: (1) How are the grammatical cohesion used in the play? (2) How are the lexical cohesion used in the play?. The purposes of this study are to describe how the grammatical cohesion and how the lexical cohesion are used in ،،The Boor” play as subject of this study.

This study used descriptive qualitative research because this study described certain condition, nature or phenomena of an object of the study. Here, “The Boor” play, as data source and the research instrument is the writer herself.

It is found out that, first, the grammatical cohesions such as substitution, ellipsis and reference are used in the play, especially in nominal substitution, clausal substitution, nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis, clausal ellipsis, personal reference and demonstrative reference. Second, the lexical cohesion is as reiteration especially in repetition form is also used in the play.

It is concluded that the grammatical cohesions especially substitution and ellipsis are rarely used but reference is often used in this play. Lexical cohesion is also rarely used in this play. Finally, it is suggested to other students who are interested in discourse analysis to pay more attention to the cohesions especially grammatical and lexical cohesions.
