Abstract

ABSTRACT

The world of youngsters is the world of curiousity, creativity and fun. Language, as a tool of communication, has a great part in the community of the youngsters. And slang language become a great phenomena in their social life. Slang, according to them has a special sense, is very acceptable and understandable when it is used in an informal communication. By using slang, they felt more friendly and sounds special than ordinary language.

This study aims to answer the following research problems. The problems of the study are : What kind of slang language are used by youngsters in Batu to communicate with others ? What slangs are only found in Batu or the original Batunese slangs ? and Why do those youngsters use slang ?

The Objectives of the Study are to find the slang commonly used by the youngsters in Batu, to find the slang which are only found in Batu or the original Batunese slang and to explain the reasons why those youngsters use slang terms in their communication.

The Method of the Study is Descriptive - Qualitative Research, because it only attempts to describe the phenomena that happen in social life, especially the usage of slang language by youngsters.

Based on the data that had been collected, slang language that used by the youngsters can be classified into four groups, those are : turned language, that consist of turned language taken from Javanese Language, turned language taken from Indonesian Language, and turned language which is turned in an irregular way, slangs which are formed by changing some of the letters, slangs which are created in totally new words and slangs which are adopted from foreign language.

From the Observation and Interview, the writer found that, in fact, there are many original Batunese slangs, such as Enggong ( called for foolish or stupid person ), etc.

And based on the Findings and Discussions, The writer draws conclusion that some of the slangs of Malang and the slangs of Batu is not really different. But beside these slangs, in fact, the youngsters of Batu have some of their own slang language. The writer also found that these youngsters use slang language due to several reasons. Most of them like to use slang language because they felt more different than by using ordinary language, and some of them used it because they said that it has a special sense and some again used slang language because they do not want the topic of their conversation understood by other people.

And the last, the writer suggests that there will be another researcher who is interested to conduct similar topic, because there still so many aspects which are expected can be analyzed more details.
