Abstract

ABSTRACT

Translation is a process of replacing/ reproducing/ transferring from the SL written text/ material/ concept into its TL equivalent in such a way that you retain the meaning and style. The use of translation has already broadened. Since the new technology of audiovisual (such as TV, movie) discovered, years after that, translation is used in audiovisual entertainment. Now, it is in the form of subtitle. Subtitle is an audiovisual translation or translation of foreign dialogue of a movie or TV program; usually displayed at the bottom of the screen. Subtitling serves two purposes: to translate the dialogue of foreign language films for secondary audiences, and to transform the audio track of television program into written captions for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.

This study is focused on the translation procedures used in the subtitle of Discovery Channel School under title ،،Understanding Oceans’’. The purpose of this study is to describe the kind of translation procedures, particularly structural and semantic procedures, used in the subtitle of Discovery Channel School under title ،،Understanding Oceans”.

This study is using descriptive qualitative method. The data are analyzed based on Newmark, Rachmadie et al, and Suryawinata and Hariyanto theories. First, analyzing the meaning of a subset of all selected Indonesian subtitle of the documentary film by finding out whether the subtitle already equivalent and to be in line with the source language (English-audio track) or not. Second, identifying the structural and semantic procedures used in the subtitle. Third stage is classifying each part of the selected and collected data into the proper translation procedures. The last is making conclusion based on the results of the analysis.

The results of this research yield to the use of translation procedures in the subtitle. All parts of structural procedures are used, i.e. addition, subtraction, and transposition procedures, in translating the English audio track of the documentary film Discovery Channel School: Understanding Oceans into Indonesian subtitle. Semantic procedures are also quite decisive in translating the English audio track of the documentary film Discovery Channel School: Understanding Oceans into Indonesian subtitle. In the translation, all of parts of semantic procedures are used. Those procedures are borrowing, cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, componential analysis, synonym, recognized translation, expansion, notes or addition, omission or deletion, and modulation.
