Abstract
ABSTRACT
Javanese language is one of regional languages in Indonesia. There are approximately 70 millions people who consider Javanese as mother tongue and use it in daily conversation. However, this language has speech level which has been growing slowly. This is an impact of Indonesian language as National language. The government then socializes to the Indonesian people to use as National language as unity language as tool of communication. Therefore, the use of Javanese language in every aspect decreases. However the students of STAIN Malang are interested in using in certain condition. It has happened automatically since Javanese language became more popular than Indonesian language.
Based on those phenomena, this study was conducted to know the real use of Javanese language in STAIN Malang. This study focuses on students of STAIN Malang as a model of Javanese speakers. Especially, the writer chooses students who studied in STAIN Malang as an object of research since they were representative for students as a whole. Meanwhile, the data were gotten from observation and interview.
The complete data were analyzed based on the research problems. The analysis resulted 1) the students used Javanese limited in informal situation. It was gradually replaced by Indonesian language in every situation, especially in formal occasion. 2) The students of STAIN Malang generally used kromo inggil to the lecturer as respect form. They wanted to protect Javanese culture with the use of Javanese especial kromo. Ngoko and Madyo rarely used by students in conversation with the lecturer because both of them appropriate used to friends. 3) Students of STAIN Malang spoke ،Javanese to the lecturer because they wanted to respect and appreciate other people especially old people. They realized that Javanese language must be protected. And they used also to get intimacy, to become real Javanese people, and as habit they spoke Javanese to other people.
Finally, after discussing all of the problems of the study, the writer proposed some suggestions dealing with the preservation of Javanese language and other further researches on Javanese language should be done.
