Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literature closely relates to society because it is the work of human being and it occurs in a social context. It expresses and communicates thought, idea, and attitudes toward society. It also can be connected to the real economic, political, and social situation. One of the literary forms is novel.
Novel is a part of prose fiction. There are satiric novels. It contains of an allusion toward certain things, such as thought, idea, ideology, attitude, certain condition of certain people or society, etc. This catches the researches’ eyes to choose George Orwell’s Animal Farm as the object of the study.
The novel is a satiric one. It presents a condition of a society (animals) under certain ideology; communism (animalism). It relates to what is going on Russia during revolution and under communism. That is why the researcher conduct research entitled “Communism Orwell’s Animal Farm ”.
The research is aimed to describe the principles of communism that reflected in the novel and the critique on this system. This study uses descriptive research design and structuralism approach. Data of the study are in form of phrases and sentences. The results of this study show that there are three principles of communism reflected in the novel, namely: (1) Class struggle is as a spirit for people who want their right as well as other classes. (2) Liberation of proletariat is as the basic movement before reaching the goal (3) Equality, is goal of the goals that also becomes the basic spirit of communism.
Meanwhile, there are three critiques on communism reflected in Animal Farm. They are: first, in practice, communism is not as good as in theory. Second, it relates to the second idea that human nature will not allow leaders to be fair.
Third, both finally come to the conclusion that communism does not make life better. It only creates another tyranny.
Finally, it is suggested for next researchers to investigate other literary works from some objects of analysis or analyze the same works from different points of view or analysis.
