Abstract
ABSTRACT
Cohesive devices which consists of grammatical and lexical cohesion is very essential in order to get a deep understanding in text. Analyzing grammatical cohesion means that we analyze the surface structure, while from lexical cohesion we can analyze the deep structure that is focused on the content. Beside understanding the content, we also try to analyze the structure construction.
Song is a kind of spoken text (spoken language and written language). English song is one of students’ media to learn English. By listening to the song, the students are able to improve their skill in listening, speaking, and vocabulary. Furthermore, through song people know and understand about something the musicians want to express their feeling, entities, or massages to others also could express what happens in daily life. Moreover, a song is composed to make US happy and fresh our mind. Men we are sorrowful, a song can amuse US whether we are happy, a song can make US happiness.
This research uses descriptive qualitative method that emphasizes the specific case-cohesive devices by using discourse approaches to analyze the spoken language taken from Paris Hilton’s songs lyrics who has been successful in her album in title Paris 2006. Therefore, the researcher is interested in observing her songs lyrics in order to find out the kinds of grammatical and lexical cohesion used in her songs lyrics and describe it. She collected the data by observing her utterances in "Paris 20002) cassette.
The results of this study show that Paris Hilton’s songs lyrics used some kinds of grammatical (substitution, ellipsis, reference, and conjunction) and lexical cohesion (reiteration, namely repetition, synonymy, hyponymy, metonymy, and antonym and collocation). The result also shows that grammatical cohesion, namely conjunction is mostly found and lexical cohesion, mely repetition is also mostly used.
Finally, by analyzing the cohesive devices in song lyrics, the listeners and the readers are expected to understand the content of song lyrics. Moreover, this study can lead the next researchers to conduct the research on the other English song lyrics in order to enrich the understanding of discourse analysis.
