Abstract

ABSTRACT

Literature has many functions. Like we see in our societies today, they use literature as their need sometimes to satirize, symbolize or protest. Novel is one of literary works that has same of meanings and tells many aspects that very interesting to be analyzed by many theories and methods. This study is focused on satire.

Haroun And The Sea of The Stories is a novel that story has purpose to satirize Ayatullah Khomeini who becomes the target. This novel is written by Salman Ruhdie in the exile. This novel is very interesting to be read by every generation or condition. The children will see this novel is interesting because it makes them are happy, and the people who understand the theory of literature or they never read the theory of satire directly they will see ifthis novel has serious meanings. In addition, this novel is called interesting by the writer.

Related to this case, this study aims at answering the following three research problems. Who are the satires represented. What are the contents and who is the target. The writer uses literature criticism as a method and he uses expressive approach to analyze this novel.

The result of this study shows the satires are represented by Khattam-Shud's action and the events occurring, such as he poisoned the Ocean, made a silent law or he under power Bezanan of the idol. There are two contents of the satire and one target. First is criticism and second is ridicule or mockery. Ayatullah Khomeini as a target because he is the factor in his fatwa that makes the condition becomes worse. He gets criticism because he makes a bad judgment to the novel and his policy forbids societies read or write a novel. He gets a mockery because his action is not proper to do one. He is a leader in religious but he does keep a peace among people in the word.

This study is not only to be studied from literary perspective but also from linguistic perspective. Satire is only one aspect in literary study, there are many aspects that are interesting to be studied such as the psychology, language, plot etc
