Abstract
ABSTRACT
English language is different from Indonesian language, especially in using the sentence correctly; it means the use of grammatical pattern. To convey the ideas, thoughts, opinions, and everything in our mind, we have to understand about the sentence. Therefore, a sentence also has an important role in advertisements since advertisements have specific characteristics, which are presented to the audience that actually does not need to read, listen, or watch the advertisements and they can affect the audience’s mind.
This study focused on the types of sentence and inter-sentential relationship of the advertisement used in Newsweek. It is intended to answer the following two research problems: (1) what are the types of sentence and inter-sentential relationship used in advertisement of Newsweek (2) how are they used in advertisement of Newsweek. The objectives of the sentence are to find and describe the types of sentence and inter-sentential relationship used in the advertisement of Newsweek.
A descriptive qualitative method is used to conduct this study because this study describes and analyzes the types of sentence and inter-sentence relationship used in advertisement of Newsweek. It presents the data in the form of utterances. The research instrument is the researcher herself because in this research she spent great deal of time to collect and analyze the data in accordance with the types of sentence and inter-sentence relationship. The researcher uses some ways to collect the data, namely; read and understand, select and classify, give number to code, and reduce the data. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzes the data using some steps, namely; find out and categorize the data, analyze and interpreted the data, and conclude the result of analysis.
The result of this study shows that the types of sentence used in advertisements are simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence and compound complex sentence and the types of inter-sentential relationship covers ellipsis, anaphora, concord, lexical features, and adverbial contrast.
This research is still away from the perfect. The researcher hopes that this study can give a good contribution to the English teachers, students, and the next researcher. Teachers should improve the teaching of language skill especially in grammatical pattern; teachers should emphasize on the using types of sentence and inter-sentence relationship. Students should be encouraged to be able to use language which is suitable with the situation, need, and purpose especially on the use of sentences and inters-sentence relationship. The next researcher who interested to conduct research on the same problem, try to choose other kinds of media.
