A semantic analysis on the lyrics of the Queen's Songs

ABSTRACT

To understand what other people say to us is not easy thing to do. We need to learn several linguistic branches such as semiotic, morphology, pragmatic and etc. Semantics is one of branches of linguistics which studies of meaning that is the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences. This branch is important one, because three kinds of meanings are involved (lexical, sentence, and discourse). To know some one’s utterance does not mean that it is done, only in oral communication. It can be in written form such as songs, drama, poems or anything, which related to meaning. Lyrics of the song might be interesting to be investigated, especially when it can inspire some one to do a good thing. More of Queen Songs talk about love: love to God, others people or ourselves.

The problems of this study are what kinds of meaning involved in Queen’s songs? And what are the massages found in Queens Songs? The writer limits the discussion of her thesis based on the kinds of meaning and messages. She takes eight songs which he been selected from Queen’s albums, namely News of The World, Classic Queen, Game, and Queen Rocks.

In analyzing these lyrics, the writer used a descriptive qualitative method. This is intended to, that the use of the language will result descriptive data, which contain written words. Therefore, this study is descriptive qualitative. The writer used Queen Cassettes as the relevant source of data. After reading, listening and making record of data obtained) the writer arranged the data systematically, which are accordance with the problems of study. Having arranged the data systematically into eight categories, she analyzes them in detail about kinds of meaning and the massages of each category.

The meaning involved in Queen Songs are lexical meaning, sentential meaning, and discourse meaning. Dealing with lexical meaning some of the word of the songs use denotation and connotation, figurative meaning, synonymy, antonym, and hyponymy. Dealing with sentential meaning, the words of the songs use semantic relations are; locution, illocution and perlocution, the truth and syntactical sentence, Dealing with discourse meaning, the words of the songs using cohesion and coherence. The messages of the songs we are must love to the God, others, and ourselves.

Finally, the writer expects that the readers, the fans and the music mania of the Queen especially at UIN Malang, after reading this thesis, can understand the meanings and the messages which are exist in Queen’s songs. In addition, the writer suggests that the future researchers would conduct the same research object with more complete data and discussion.
