Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study of the ways in which language ،means’ is called semantics. Semantics is one of branches of linguistics in the study of meaning that is the meaning of words, phrases, and sentence. According to the theory of semantics, meanings are ideas or concepts that can be transferred from the speaker’s mind to the hearer’s mind by embodying them, as it were, in the form of one language or another.
Based on the fact, this study was conducted. It focused on the meaning of units of language in some conversations quoted from Miss Congeniality 2 film. This Study has two problems, they are about aspects of language and aspects of non language that makes meaning of units of language different in some conversational extracted from Miss Congeniality 2 film. And automatically, the objectives are to find out the aspects of language and aspects of non-language that makes meaning of units of language different in some conversational extracted from Miss Congeniality 2 film.
This study employs descriptive qualitative research approach because it does not need variable. Research data of utterances are obtained from conversations of Miss Congeniality 2 film. The subject of the research is Miss Congeniality 2 film. To make the data credible, a scripting the conversation of film is done. Data analysis is done using componential analysis, in which a particular set of words appears to be composed in some systematic way.
Then the data gotten were analyzed based on the problems of the study. The result of this study shows that: 1. the aspects of language that make the connotative meaning of sentences are grammatical meaning such as: syntax, morphology and lexical meaning such as: intentional and extensional meaning. 2. the aspects of non language that make the connotative meaning of sentences are posture, physical contact, appearance, gesture, facial expression, eye contact, paralanguage, kinesics, etc.
The writer suggests the reader, other researcher, and English learner who want to make this study as reference for the research; they can analyze another style with semantics study or in other branch of linguistics point of view. She expects that this study will be useful for US. Besides, she hopes that this research made someone eager to know more about the meaning, in accordance with semantics analysis. And the last, the writer suggests to the next researcher to more explore the research in this fact.
