Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research focuses on the explicated meaning used by reporters in creating titles about Yogya earthquake issued by English Tempo magazine. The researcher limits this research only on the titles issued by English Tempo magazine about Yogya earthquake published on June 2006. An explicature is a propositional form communicated by an utterance, which is pragmatically constructed on the basis of the propositional schema or template (logical form) that the utterance encodes; its content is an amalgam of linguistically decoded material and pragmatically inferred material. This means that it is hard to understand an utterance based on a certain context. The explicature is a term used to describe the full propositional form of a sentence whose indeterminacies have been resolved by a process of inference. The explicature can be found in the titles. The titles are the interesting text on the top of the text of news. The titles issued by English Tempo magazine are written in phrase using simple language and viewed from different angles. By using simple language and various angles, the researcher can possibly get more rich interpretation. As a result, the propositional fonns from these titles are more varied.
Related to the phenomena above, this research aims to answer the how is explicature used in the titles issued by English Tempo magazine This research is conducted to provide descriptive knowledge about the way the explicature used in the titles issued by English Tempo magazine about Yogya earthquake.
This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this research are the titles issued by English Tempo magazine. The data source of this study is all the titles issued by English Tempo magazine about Yogya earthquake. The data of this study are collected from English Tempo magazine. The research instrument is the researcher himself. The steps to collect data are recording the texts issued by English Tempo magazine about Yogya earthquake, selecting the texts having titles about Yogya earthquake issued by English Tempo magazine, and arranging the data based on the order of publication. To analyze data, the data are presented, the data are analyzed, the data are discussed then the data are concluded.
Based on the data presentation and discussion, it is concluded that the titles issued by English Tempo magazine about Yogya earthquake can be classified into metaphoric style. It is interesting to analyze the titles having metaphoric style because we need to determine the denotative ai٦d connotative meaning first before they are analyzed using Carston’s theory of explicature.
According to the research findings, it is recommended that the teachers use these findings as the teaching material of explicature theory that related to the figurative language, that is metaphoric style. Teachers are also recommended to improve teaching explicature by giving empiric example about metaphoric style is used in the titles. In addition, it is recommended that English Department students use these findings to develop more knowledge about Carston’s theory of explicature. They are also recommended to understand these explicating titles having metaphoric style to enrich understanding of theory of explicature. Furthermore, it is recommended that the next researchers use these findings as the additional reference to analyze the titles having figurative language. They are also suggested to conduct similar studies, which involve more complete data in searching other areas, such as daily conversation and talk show. It is also suggested that they use Robyn Carston’s theory of explicature to conduct the research.
