The analysis of cultural values in romance "Di Bawah Lindungan Ka'bah" by Hamka

ABSTRACT

Literature is actually a reflection of life experience that includes yarious aspects of both personal and social lives. The writer chose HAMKA'S romance, especially "Di Bawah Lindungan Ka'bah", because all of romance used simple language but it has deep meaning. His romance always teaches about noble characters. Di Bawah Lindungan Ka'bah is one of his great works. It tells about the culture of west Sumatera especially Minangkabau society that is different from other societies. According to HAMKA, culture in Minangkabau society is a contradiction with Islam and he has written this roman to criticize it. But, in this study the writer wants to focus on cultural values that appear in this romance and the effect of the cultural values on the main characters personality.

The problems of the study are: (1) What are the cultural values appearing in the romance? (2) What is the effect of cultural values on the main characters' personality reflected in the romance Di Bawah Lindungan Ka'bah?

The writer limits the discussion based on the cultural values that appear in the romance Di Bawah Lindungan Ka'bah that are related to Minangkabau.

In this research the writer used descriptive Qualitative Method because in this research the writer will describe the content of the romance. The approach that used in this research is sociological approach. The writer took the data from the original text "Di Bawah Lindungan Ka'bah" by HAMKA, in data collection the writer uses some steps: (1) Getting and reading the book "Di Bawah Lindungan Ka'bah", at least three or more until the writer understands completely about the whole story. (2) Looking for the paragraphs that match to the problem of study. (3) Choosing the data and (4) identifying and categorizing the data that relate to problem of study.

The writer starts analyzing the data using the following procedures: (1) Reading and understanding the text "Di Bawah Lindungan Ka'bah". (2) Selecting and classifying the data into paragraphs and sentences that can support and match to the problems of this study, And then (3) discussing the data from each of categorizing. The next, (4) arranging the result of the data analysis, Finally (5) the taking conclusion.

In the result of the study, the writer concludes that in this romance there are some kinds of cultural values that appear in this romance and the affect of the main character's personality. There are some kinds of cultural values, such as; social system, kinship system and tradition. Culture gives the effect on the main characters personality. They, Zaenab and Hamid, have different social class, and the tradition force them to repress their feeling. Then, Hamid went to Mecca with his feeling, Zaenab hid himself in her sadness. Finally, they were separated by death. Zaenab died after she hid her feeling and longing. Not long time Hamid Caught up her darling.

Finally, from this analysis of this romance the writer hopes to the reader that it is better for everyone to take a lesson from this story and the reader can understand about the hidden massage. The writer has suggestion to the next researcher who is interested to research a similar topic can develop this research because in this roman there are many kinds of values that can be analyzed. .And to broaden student's knowledge the writer has suggestion to the literary teacher. The writer hopes to the literary teacher to give more material about literary works and add the reference of literature.
