A study on Javanese dialect used by Sidayu and Ujung Pangkah people in Gresik

ABSTRACT

Language is a medium to express knowledge to other people and to next generation. It means, the communication among people take place by language through the expression of thought, feeling, need, emotion and idea. Language has variety depend on region under social group it can be called dialect. In this case the writer studied about Javanese dialect, especially at Sidayu and Ujung Pangkah because the people in these two regions use Javanese Language to mother tongue.

In this study, the writer formulated three research problems. They are: (1) What are the Javanese dialect used by Sidayu and Ujung Pangkah people in Gresik? ; (2) What are the differences between Javanese dialect used in Sidayu and Ujung Pangkah people in Gresik? ; (3) What makes people in Sidayu and Ujung Pangkah Gresik different in using Javanese dialect? . Based on these three problems the writer hope that these people will understand how rich they are with various unique words.

Some theories, which have relationships with the problems, are used, as the foundation of the analysis; the theories are sociolinguistics, language, variety of language, speech community, dialect, and Javanese language.

This analysis uses descriptive method. The informants taken in the study are two persons come from Sidayu and another two come from Ujung Pangkah. The analyzed data are about 266 Javanese words used in Sidayu dialect and Ujung Pangkah dialect.

Having analyzed the data, the writer find out that all words of Javanese language at two place consist of ngoko style (low style, no honorific) but they have different form on dialect which have the same meaning such as on verb, adjective, noun, and adverb. In addition, their dialect have differences in pronunciation like, they also have different pronunciations and writing like /٦tivi / tivi /” and ،،tipi / tipi،، loro / loro /” and ،، gering / g<3rir٠ /”. The factors influent the differences each dialect are condition of geography„ ground, weather, and area.

Finally, this research just analyzes Javanese words used in Sidayu dialect and Ujung pangkah dialect. Besides, there are some other dialects that interesting to be analyzed.
