Abstract
ABSTRACT
Language is most important of communication and also has a social function. It is need by all people in the world and cannot be separated from human being. Therefore, when we communicate with other person, we need a great comprehension because as usual it has certain meaning. A language conducts as to understand the message of communication and a way to get the message of communication. Semantics is a part of language that has study about meaning.
This study is conducted at the semantic analysis of “Bittersweet” Danielle Steel’s novel. According to the background, this research is conducted to answer the following research problem ،،what are the meaning involved in Bittersweet Danielle Steel’s novel” and the messages. It uses descriptive qualitative method. The data are in the form paragraphs of novel.
Data analysis shows some finding based on the formulated research question. According to semantic analysis of “Bittersweet” Danielle Steel’s novel perfectly covered the three kinds of meaning: lexical meaning, sentence and utterance meaning, and discourse meaning. Besides the dominant and in dominant used of meaning has its own variation.ئ lexical meaning the use of connotation, antonym, hyponymy, synonymy, idiom and figurative language are dominant, in figurative language the use of metaphor and in discourse meaning it is dominated by pronoun and conjunctions. The minimal use of the meaning is stated on ‘:Bittersweet” Danielle Steel’s novel are ellipsis and reference.
Based on those findings, the researcher suggest to the next researcher in order to be able to make more wonderfill and more complete analysis on the same field, because every literary work especially novel has its own uniqueness in the side of meaning.
