Abstract

ABSTRACT

Literature is the results of human creation through emotional and imaginative language and usually it describes life. The study of literature can be devided into four kinds; they are novel, poetry, drama, and prose. To study literature is very subjective, since every single person has a different comprehension, interpretation, and impression after reading a literary work.

There are some reasons which provided the basis for the writer in choosing this topic. By reading the novel we may inquire knowledge about the essential meaning of life because it consists of many values and will create or build a cultured man. Therefore, he was interested in analyzing moral values in Hermann Hesse’s Demian since he knows there are many moral values that are used in that novel. The writer decided to give the title of his thesis “Moral Values in the Novel Demian by Hermann Hesse”. The Problems of the study is what are moral values in the relationship between man and his individual life, man and society, and man and God in the novel Demian?. The objective of study is to acquire the answer to the question intended in this study and gain better understanding on the content of novel.

In chapter two, the writer explains about the theories that are related to the problems of the study. Besides, the writer also quotes some definitions and gives conclusion. ٠

In chapter three, the writer explains about methodology of the study. The step how he obtained and collected all data to be observed by finding the book used as sources of this study, making record the data, selecting and picking the data, then arranging systematically in accordance with the problems of the study. To corroborate the data, triangulation is used in this study. The writer decided to use triangulation of " data sources and methodological triangulation. After the data had been collected, they are analyzed by categorized the data into three categories; moral values in the relationship between man and his individual life, man and society, and man and God. Then each category is discussed, analyzed, and concluded.

In chapter four, the writer presents the data obtained from the data sources. The data presentation is categorized into three categories that are in accordance with the number of research questions proposed in the introduction. Then the data of each category is presented, discussed or analyzed and concluded. After the data of the whole categories are presented and analyzed, the writer makes tentative conclusion.

In the last chapter, the writer makes conclusion and suggestion. He found some aspect of moral values in the relationship between man and his individual life, man and society and man and God. Finally die writer hopes that die other researchers conduct an analysis about moral value related to the politic in the social norms. ,The writer hoped that this analysis could be as a source to the further analysis.
