Abstract

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to describe the classification of idiomatic expression and its meaning in the title of news- coverage in Jakarta Post.

The study is used qualitative method in discussing the type and the meaning of idiomatic expression. The data in this research were taken from Jakarta Post issued from October 2001- January 2002. The total numbers of available idiomatic expressions were 10 idioms in which each idiom was examined in different context.

Moreover, the results of the analysis lead to the following conclusions; (a) the idiomatic expressions in the title of news-coverage in Jakarta Post were grouped into partial idiom and highly idiomatic.(b) Each idiom had particular meaning and referred to certain situation, acts, or condition in various kind activity or profession.

They are some suggestions given by the writer. First, to the next researchers who want to analyze this field should take pragmatic and semantic approach to have a more comprehensive analysis. Second, to elaborate analysis the future researchers should also compare another newspaper or media. The correspondent of Jakarta Post should account idiomatic expression to enlarge the knowledge of Indonesian reader, which used English as second language. And the last, for English learners, the idiomatic expression should be used in daily conversation to master and understand the intended meaning.
