Abstract
ABSTRACT
Language is very important to society to communicate each other, while the spoken language however takes the greater role than the written.
When we speak something, actually we act this utterance not only for giving the word to the participant. We can make request, order, command, etc with the utterance we speak.
The writer of this thesis is interested to study about the indirect requesting act and the factors that influence the choice of language used. She focused the study in the Javanese-Indonesian that is the speech event that involves both the languages.
The literature that are included and related to this research is language and society, bilingualism that is about code mixing and and switching, speech community, speech act, and indirect speech act. To make this research valid the researcher also takes the previous study from Umi Subarkah’s study about rejection act.
Realizing the purpose of the research, the writer of this thesis use descriptive-qualitative that is to describe and observe phenomena that actually exist in the field. In getting the data, the researcher as instrument in this study does observation, and interview, and while observation and interview are done the researcher uses tape recorder and personal note to avoid missing the data. The subject of this study are the Kediri people and the data are taken from desa Suwaluh, Desa Jambu, Kecamatan Pare, and Desa Bogo that are still as the area of Kediri.The writer of this thesis chooses these places because those places are felt have represented the data that are needed. She takes 20 dialogues that contains of requesting act in the indirect way in a kind of sentence as the data sources. The writer of this thesis collects the data using the steps, those are while observation and interview the data that are gotten are placed in a kind of personal note and tape recorder, reducing the data that are not needed, transcribing and analyzing the characteristic of indirect requesting act and the factors that follow, explaining the data in the discussion, and the last is presenting the result of the whole.
The data are analysed and discussed in chapter IV. Finally, the writer of this thesis takes the conclusion in chapter V that the requesting act that used by Kediri people is varieties. Those are requesting by using interrogative, requesting by giving statement/information, requesting that focus the hearer’s ability to do something, requesting by giving irony, requesting that places the participant in the higher position, and requesting by giving reason. Such factors that influence are the setting, the situation, the topic and the participants, and the mixing and switching the code between javanese and Indonesian is common in the dialogue.
