Abstract
ABSTRACT
Studying literature is very advantage ones since it can give enjoyment and more understanding about the values of life. Study figurative language give better understanding for others. Human life is very complex with many conflicts and challenges to be faced. The novel is one form of literary works. In a novel, readers can get better knowledge. The use of figurative language is closely related with the author’s mean. Novel often appears to be a rich gallery of people’s problems that can be seen in daily life. A novel portrayed the human soul with his sociological aspects.
This study aimed at answering the following research problems. 1). How are the meanings of Metaphors used in Mangunwijaya’s Burung-Burung Manyar?. 2). How are the meanings of Personifications used in Mangunwijaya’s Burung Manyar?. The purposes of this study are to analyze the meanings of metaphor and personification on Mangunwijaya’s Burung-Burung Manyar.
This study used a qualitative design and the descriptive technique of analysis to describe the sentences that included on metaphor and personification. The writer decided to make use of the literary perspectives as the basis of her analysis embodied the theory of figurative language. The figurative languages analyzed were Metaphor and Personification.
Then, the findings were achieved by analyzing the quotations cited from the novel on the basis of the figurative language Metaphor and Personification that found in the novel. From the results of the data analysis, it can be concluded that Metaphor and Personification are the dominant figurative languages that used by Mangunwijaya.
This study offers some knowledge for the students who like to study the figurative language and also offers help for people in understood the inner soul of others. By reads this novel, people can find many valuable lessons of life, and it can be said that reading a revolution novels is as interesting as reading the popular ones.
The writer realizes that this thesis is still from being perfect, but she tried to do her best in finishing this thesis. She will be happy if there are other readers who are interested in studies further Mangunwijaya’s Burung-Burung Manyar especially on figurative languages after reads this thesis.
