Nurses' language styles and their Implications to Patients' Psychological development in Dr. Saiful Anwar Hospital Malang

ABSTRACT

The way human communication in the world is language. Therefore, so many things we can do with language. However, the way of person speaks language and choose words is different with others. It depends on their own styles to express their idea to others through language. So, it can influence people positively and negatively. However, positive effect of nurses’ language styles are believed can be beneficial for patients who are being hospitalized in the process of their recovery.

,This is a discriptive study that analyze nurses’ language styles and their implications to patients’ psychological development in Dr. Saiful Anwar hospital Malang. The primary purpose of this research is to find out the language styles used by nurses in caring patients, nurses’ language styles related to patients’ psychological development and nurses’ reasons in using certain language styles to their patients. However, the result of this study are recommended to enrich people’s knowledge about the existence of language styles used for care patients, it beneficial for nurses to learn how they have to use language styles to patients and this research also be useful to improve the quality of hospital mainly Dr. Saiful Anwar hospital Malang in providing care services.

This study involved one of hospital in Malang, Dr. Saiful Anwar hospital. To obtain the data, the writer take from observations and interviews with three patients and nurses are conducted. Then analyze the data, with transcribing and analyzing the words, statements and opinions that occur from observation and interview.

After analyzing the data, it can identified that nurses’ language styles to care patients is soft-language styles. The relation of nurses’ language styles to patients’ psychological development are to help reduce the pain mentally, give motivations to recover soon and patients get attention and self-dignity. Whereas, the reasons of nurses use language styles are the differentiations of patients’ perception, the aim of medical care achieved, patients follow what nurses said and patients understand what nurses already said.

By identifying kinds of nurses’ language styles, the relation of nurses’ language styles to patients’ psychological development and the reasons of nurses use language styles, it known as the phenomena that occur in hospital where patients are treated. Recommendations are shaped for hospital mainly to improve the quality of Dr. Saiful Anwar hospital Malang in providing services.
