Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literature is difficult to be studied, because literature is a unique subject and even becomes the monster one for some students. In studying literature, it will cover emotion, imagination, feeling, creativity as well as the knowledge in it. In this study, it will be focused on one of literature branches that is poetry. Poetry itself also has certain characteristic, they are symbol, allusion, devices and figurative language. The scope in this study is limited on six poems, they are My love is like a red, red rose, Green grow the rashes, O wert thou in cauld blast, Scots wha hae, Willie Brewed, and Auld lang syne written by Robert Bums.
The purpose of this study are to find out the kinds of figurative language that used in Robert Bums’ poems and find out the value that appears in poems.
This study uses descriptive research design to describe the content of the poems. And the approach is semantics approach to explain the meaning of the poems, and uses structural approach because in analyzing poetry it deals with construction of the elements.
The result of this study are “My love is like a red, red rose tells about Bums’ feeling to his beloved girl but he leaves her for awhile. Green grow the rashes tells about Robert Bums’ condition is bad. He doesn’t meet with his beloved girlfor the last time. O wert thou in cauld blast tells about Robert Bums’ beloved girl is very meeaning for his life, because she loves her so much. Scots wha hae tells about motivation that is given by Robert Bruce to his platoon on subjugate bannock Bum’s platoon. Willie Brewed tells about three brothers that they make special meeting because they don’t meet each others for long time. And the last poem is Auld lang syne tells about Robert Bums’ past-life which is very beautiful to remembered it. Another result of this study are some figurative language that appears are simile, hyperbole, and personification. And the last ia value, value that appears are estethical value and religious value.
