Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literature has a very close relationship with our life. It is very useful to enrich someone’s experience and to help him or her face the world more wisely. Lady Windermere's Fan that was written by Oscar Wilde in 1892 is one of plays reveals the problems of life which often happens in a family life.
The objectives of the study in this thesis are to describe the support of plot to the theme and also to find out the theme of the play. To achieve the statements of the problems, the researcher analyzes intrinsic elements and applies a structural approach. It means this study only analyzes the work purely without relating to any other elements beyond the work. This study is out from its historical background, the author, and the reader. Although, there are many intrinsic elements in drama, the importance of a whole literary work is theme, because the theme shows the central idea of a work that is conveyed by the author. By knowing the theme, the readers will understand more easily what a drama is actually talking bout. As the elements of drama, theme, character, plot, and setting can not be separated each other (Nurgiyantoro, 1995: 74:75).Theme and plot have closely relationship because theme can be in the strong plot.
This study is literary criticism that has the critic’s specific purposes are to analyze, to judge, to interpret, and to evaluate a work especially on plot and theme in Lady Windermere ,s Fan play. The data source of this study is from the text of the play entitled Lady Windermere's Fan. The research instrument of this study is the researcher her self The data collection are close reading, understanding, gathering, and selecting the data. The data analysis are classifying, interpreting the plot development, describing the result and making conclusion the result of the study.
Based on the writer’s analysis, some parts of plot support the theme of the play; they are conflict, complication, and climax. These three parts of plot describe the sacrifice of !,ord Windermere and Mrs. Erlynne. They ruin their honor to protect Lady Windermere. Another side, Lady Windermere leaves the home for receiving Lord Darlington’s love because of angry and jealously to her husband although she is actually a though and wise woman. Their actions are caused from love to another. Love has the power to lead someone do the sacrifice for the sake and also the happiness of someone else whom she or he loves. Based on the result of the study, the theme of Lady Windermere’s Fan is ،،Love makes someone do everything, eventhough he or she should sacrifice his or her honor”.
