Special terms used by Santri in Pesantren Putri Al-Hidayah Sukorejo Pasuruan

ABSTRACT

Pesantren is a place where the students stay and study to deepen their religion knowledge. As part of society, Pesantren also has its own culture, tradition and belief that usually influence the language used. So, there are some special terms that emerge in Pesantren. However, not every santri knows the intended meaning of the terms. The result they cannot emerge the hope of the terms in their life. Besides, Pesantren is the oldest educational institution that is related to the life. It also can be met in every part of Java and include a successful institution that is believed by the society to get religion knowledge. However, not everybody knows its special terms include the intended meaning. Moreover, those special terms must have great hope for the users. So, knowing the intended meaning is important. In the hope that it is not only special terms but also can show special value in the life, especially for the one who uses it.

Because of the problems above, there are some questions to guide the sollution, 1. what are the special terms mostly used by santri in Pesantren Putri Al - Hidayah Sukorejo Pasuruan, include special terms and general terms; 2. how are those terms derived; and 3. why do they use those terms.

To answer the questions, the researcher uses some theories which are related to the problems. Therefore, there are some theories which are relevant to answer the problems from the data gotten, such as Pesantren society, culture, some theories about words and some theories about meanings.

To get the data, beside field note, observation, participation and interview are done. There are two kinds of interview, open and close interview. After getting the data, selecting, classifying and focusing are done to avoid irrelevant data. Then, describing the data by using descriptive qualitative method. Triangulation method is also used to prove the validity of the findings.

The results of the research show that there are some special terms used by santriwati which emerge from Arabic, Javanese and Indonesia language. However, Arabic and Javanese language are dominant in the Pesantren. The terms are emerged by borrowing, clipping and acronym. Besides, there are some reasons for the students to use the terms. First is their believes that Arabic is a religion language. Second is a means to get easier understanding of Pesantren lessons. Third is the polite expression of the students to respect Buya and his family. Besides, the close relationship among the big family of Pesantren is also ones purpose.

Finally this research is hoped to be useful for the researcher, santri, and the other researchers who are interested in the same field.
