Abstract
ABSTRACT
There are a lot of information media available in Indonesia. One of the kinds of information media is television. Through television, people may watch and listen as well directly to the information and entertainment provided. One of the televisions that are available in Indonesia is METRO TV. METRO TV is an Indonesian private TV station that has many kinds of program. One of the programs is talk show. Usually, in a talk show there is a presenter that guides die program. The interesting program is depended on him/her as the presenter.
Related to the facts above, the researcher had two research problems. They are: 1. Mat kinds of politeness strategies are used by Life & Style presenters on METRO TV? and 2. How are politeness strategies used by Life هك Style presenters on METRO TV?. This research used qualitative research design. All the data of the research problems were analyzed in this research were the utterances produced by Life <£ Style presenters. The data were taken from 09th - 1 الاه May and 26'اا 28 - لأ June 2006 And the subject of this study was the presenters of Life هك Style program. They were; Jules, Chintia, Lynn, and Kimora. The data were analyzed by using Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategy.
Based on the first research problem, this research shows that Life & Style presenters use four kinds of politeness strategy. They are Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off record. Furthermore based on the second research problem "How are politeness strategies used by Life هك Style presenters on METRO TV?". It was found that the presenters of Life & Style program apply bald on record strategy when they want to minimize the impact of losing face and embarrass the hearer in having conversation. Moreover, the positive politeness strategy is also found when they want to minimize the distance among them and make the condition wanner and more comfortable. Negative politeness also is used in their interaction when they want to make conversation in formal way.
Beside three strategies above, speakers also use off record strategy in their interaction in he form of understatement, and implicanire.
There are some suggestion to be given: first, For the audiences of Life &. Style have to be more sensitive in understanding the utterance of presenters in Life هك Style, whether it is polite or not. Second, for Life هك Style presenters, they must still apply these politeness strategies in guiding the program. Finally, for the next researchers to use other part of conversation analysis, such as speech act, deixis, implicature, explicature and others in analyzing Life & Style. It is also suggested to the next researchers to use other politeness strategies theories to do an investigation on the same field of research.
