Abstract
ABSTRACT
This paper concerns with Madurese world view and life attitude. The main, reason of this study is that Madurese world view and life attitude are still not much known for many people outside Madura. They still consider that Madurese life is a rude culture with the violence and the horrifying tradition inside such as Carok, bull race and so on. However, it is still significant that Madurese life is still viewed as life of violence in which Madurese people are very rude in solving their life problem. This is the main reason why Madurese life is less researched by many researchers outside Madura, especially by foreign researchers. However, describing and explaining Madurese people for the other pcople outsidc■ is very significant. It is to inform and clarify that Madurese life is not the same as what they have been thinking up to now.
The major problem of this study is concerning what are Madurese world view and life attitude and its basic thought.
The objective of this study is to find out and describe Madurese world view and life attitude through Madurese modem short stories which are collected by Haryadi and his friend.
In order to understand and comprehend Madurese world view and life attitude, the writer takes the data source from Madurese modern literature, in the form of Madurese modem short stories by Haryadi, et. al. The reason to get the data from Madurese modern short stories is that they comprise a factual view and of Madurese life. However, the writer believes that Madurese world view and life attitude could be caught from its Madurese modem literature.
In analyzing this literature, the writer uses a descriptive-qualitative method, because he would like to describe the real condition existing in the data inductively and descriptively. While the approach used is sociological literary approach. The writer tries to find out Madurese world view and life attitude through the social context of Madurese modem literature. The technique of data collecting is structured and participato٢y observation. Whereas, data analysis technique is reflective analysis model. The writer describes data based on mature understanding and explain it descriptively.
Having analyzed the data, the writer finds out that Madurese world view and life attitude can be classified into four aspects. Those are relating to God, human being, the nature of life, and uni verse. Relating to God, Madurese people view 11 tat God is the owner and the supreme substance in this world. He is the creator of the universe and its content, especially human being. He has the power to do whatever he wants for his creature, especially for human life. They view that whatever the life condition that they are undergoing ,either poor or rich condition, they will accept it as it is entirely coming from God’s will. However, it is not surprising that Madurese life attitude appears that they are obeying and diligent in performing God’s order and avoiding his prohibition, and also accepting their life condition in their life tune (qona'ah and tawakal). Relating to human being, Madurese people view that they are social creature in this world. In this life, they have to help and interact each other, either poor or rich people. This perception has created the tradition of togetherness in Madurese life (royongan) and the harmonious social relation pattern (rokon) by their respecting each other (ngormat) with etiquette as the main principle behind this attitude (tatakrama). It means that they have to behave with etiquette without making someone else’s feeling hurt (andhap ashor). Because if they feel hurt with someone’s attitude, they will usually overcome it by fighting each other or what we call it as Carok. Furthermore, relating to their view to the nature of life, they view that they should accept this life as God has determined it. In spite of that, to be success in this life, they have to try and sacrifice to achieve it with hard work. Although they seem acceptance (qonaah) and submissive their life to God (pasrah), They are well known as smart and hard workers in any kind of job they are handling. The last one is Madurese world view and life attitude about the universe. They view that God creates the universe for themselves, as they are leaders of the universe ,kholifuh fit urdl’. They should take care and make it in balance. Moreover, they get the benefit of the universe to fulfill their daily life needs.
For suggestion, the ١vriler hopes that many other people outside Madura are willing to understand and comprehend Madurese world view and life attitude and its basic thought, so that they could communicate and interact with Madurese people correctly without any misunderstanding which could lead to conflict. For the next researchers, the writer suggests that they could continue this study through field research. It is to make this finding valid and reliable.
