ABSTRACT
The phenomena of language are interesting to be investigated. Everybody uses language and one of the users is a presenter. The presenter is someone who presents something infront of public. One of presenters is a music presenter on TV. A music program on TV is Clear Top 10 guided by two presenters, Dewi Sandra and Bertrand Antolin, broadcast by RCTI on every Saturday afternoon at 16.30-17.00 pm, and it is one of many music program provided by television. Clear Top 10 presenters on RCTI guide a music chart count down program which contain of The Ten International Hits and The Ten Local Hits chart count down. Besides that. Clear Top 10 consist of extra information around movie-highlight, behind the scene, hangout places, and fashion.
In guiding the show, the ]presenters use language, of course, mostly used by presenter on television and in this case, the presenters employ code switching. It means that in guiding the show on TV they use two languages, Indonesian language and English, Then, they switch the language from Indonesian language into English or vice versa. Unlike the presenter in a radio, the presenter on TV can be seen and heard, or let say, the audiences may enjoy them within audio and visual technology. The presenters communicate and interact with the audiences when they guide or present the show and they mostly switch the code between Indonesian language and English.
Concerning with this thesis entitled “Code Switching Used by Clear Top 10 Presenters on RCTI”, as the methodology, the writer used descriptive qualitative research. The structural analysis method is based on the phenomena that usually happen in daily activities, especially to the language used by Clear Top 10 presenters on RCTI. In order to this research is managable and systematic, the writer choose direct observation, recording and note taking in way of gathering the data. At last, he combine the three of them with transcribing as another method.
From the analysis, the writer found out that the presenters employed external code switching, situational code switching, and metaphorical code switching. The reasons why they switch the code are mostly because of topic and situational changes and both are the dominant aspect of why they switch the code. Besides that, the appearance of third speaker also causing them switch the code. Sometimes they switch the code to avoid boredsome and monotony. The characteristics of code switching in the language used are mostly in the form of long sentences or phrases rather than in the form of word، They used Jakarta dialect and employed the terms usually used in presenting music charts count down program. Here, shows that the relationship between language and society are closely related. Language used to interact and communicate to get better understanding and convey a meaning or message from what is said within society. The presenters want to communicate and interact with the audiences through television when they guide the show to make them happy and enjoy the program, and that is the aim of the show.
Finally, the phenomena of language within society are worthy and valuable thing to be investigated. People may use monolingual, bilingual, or even multilingual within society. It is impossible for one to speak only one single language within multisociety, like Indonesia for example. They have to use at least to languages to make the communication and interaction run smoothly.
