A study on Loan terms as used in Jawa Pos daily newspaper

ABSTRACT

Indonesian language as a 'live language' which is growing always experiences many new developments. One of the growing phenomena of Indonesian is the existence of many new terms adopted from foreign languages, especially English as an international language that is used more in the world.

Newspaper as an important medium in delivery news often uses news terms including loan terms, especially the use of science and technology terms which Indonesian does not have those special terms yet ٠ Therefore, the journalists/editors of newspapers use English terms, although sometimes it does not suit with the Indonesian rule.

In this research, Jawa Pos is a medium of information which uses loan terms from English as object of the research. The research aims to know the loan terms used in Jawa Pos, whether it suits and follows the Indonesian rule accurately or not. Thi s research was focused on Jawa Pos published in ten days, from 4th until 13th of July 2001 on articles of the first page in Jawa Pos.

The method that i s used in thi s research i s descriptive method, which is applied in data analysis.

The result of the research shows that Jawa Pos uses many loan terms from English in news writing. There are three kinds of loaning foreign terms especially from Engl ish، i. e. by original words, adaptation, and translation. From these processes of loaning English terms, Jawa Pos has 499 words which are originally from English. The mistake percentage from the use of the loan terms is 20.4%. The biggest number of mistakes is in not translating the loan terms into Indonesian.
