Abstract
ABSTRACT
One of literary forms is drama or play. Many things can be expressed in a play, such as feelings, thoughts, ideas, and willingness of the author. Each the author has difference language in expressing their ideas. The ideas are expressed in the form of figurative language. Figurative language is the author’s personality, character, and his ability. Besides, figurative language is influenced by environment, religion and education of the author. In other words, the author’s characteristic known through figurative language which he use.
The problems of the study in this thesis are: to describe the kinds and the dominant figurative language used in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. The messages in the play Romeo and Juliet.
This study is a descriptive qualitative method. In the research instrument, she as a key instrument She use triangulation of data sources and methodological triangulation to strengthen and support her data which is investigated. The data in this study are taken from the play script Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. It was taken from book entitled ”William Shakespeare the Complete Work by C.J Sisson”.
This thesis is library study. The writer using some steps in collecting the data: finding the book used as sources data is play script Romeo and Juliet, reading the play script, making record the data obtained from the play script, finding the data obtained from Internet, copying the data from Internet, making record the copy of the data and arranging the data systematically. After that, the data is analyzed as follows: categorizing the data according to the number of scene, analyzing the data of each scene, categorizing the data of each act, analyzing the data based on the act and making conclusion. Then, technique in analyzing the data is use snowballing. The last step drew conclusion about the kinds and the dominant figurative language used in the play Romeo and Juliet, and also the messages in this play.
The final result of this study had been found some kinds figurative language they are: personification, euphemism, metaphor, simile hyperbole, antonomasia, antithesis, allusion and litotes. The dominant figurative language used in the play Romeo and Juliet is metaphor, personification and euphemism. The messages in the play Romeo and Juliet are give the freedom to the children in choosing their partner of life, compelled desire to the children brought suffering, do not burned each problem to the children, and forced love never happy ending.
Finally, in analyzing the play script of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, for the reader are expected to know, understand and interpret details and deeply about the hidden message which had been analyzed and explored by the writer. For the literary teachers are hoped to give many references about literary works especially figurative language. The last, the writer hopes that for the next researcher who is interest in analyzing this topic will do better than the writer. Besides that, will get much information about figurative language that is used in the play of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
