Expressions used by Kyai Langgar in Desa Wates Wetan Kecamatan Ranuyoso Kabupaten Lumajang

ABSTRACT

The selection of expressions used by Kyai Langgar as the main discussion in this study was based on the argument that recently, there were increasing raise of the study in the field of religious phenomena especially related with Kyai-Pesantren in general and Kyai Langgar in particular. Since the research about Kyai only touches the social symptoms and rarely (if nof never) in concordance with language, it is now interesting to conduct the research in the field of Kyai Langgar from the point of view of language phenomena especially expressions he uses in certain contexts. The problem taken in this research included: (1) what are expressions used b٠١' Kyai Langgar, (2) how are these expressions used and (3) what are the functions of these expressions in social context. These three problems are to be answered in this research.

This research aimed to find and identify the form of expressions used by Kyai Langgar in arisan activity, how they are used, and also to describe the functions of these expressions in the community.

This study used qualitative-descriptive design by using sociolinguistic approach. Since the subject selected in this study were four Kyai Langgar who lived in Desa Wates Wetan Kecamatan Ranuyoso Kabupaten Lumajang based on the specific criteria, therefore the data resource would be conversations in the form of expressions used in arisan activity. The researcher utilized participant observation, field note, and interview. In checking data validity the researcher used, triangulation of methodology.

After conducting data analysis the researcher found that the expressions used by Kyai Langgar in Desa Wates Wetan Kecamatan Ranuyoso Kabupaten Lumajang were in the form of Arabic Language (in this writing it refers to religious expressions) function to refer anything happened as the God’s gift. These expressions were used by Kyai Langgar in normal situation relating to their psychological condition to attract the community to hold aqidah of Islam tighter. These expressions were also used to show their social identity (not position) especially among the members of arisan,, and the community in general.
