Abstract
ABSTRACT
To live in this world means to communicate. Language as a means of communication-system used by men in order to transfer the idea they have not understood. Language must make contact with the outside world. This contact is what we call meaning. The term meaning is used in many ways, not all of them equally relevant to language. Yet everyone who knows a language can understand what is said to him or her and can produce strings of words that convey meaning. Semantics as one branches of linguistics is the study of meaning, that is the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences. Kinds of meaning are also found on language of songs, as a literary work. This means that language is thought and activity. Jon Bon Jovi, as a legend of hard rock music group, expresses his lyrics used kinds of meaning to get a good lyrics in order to deliver the messages for their listener.
This study is to conduct to investigate: what are kinds of meaning used in each line of the lyrics of Jon Bon Jovi’s songs? And what are the messages found in Jon Bon Jovi’s songs? Since to discuss every meaning in the lyrics of Jon Bon Jovi’s songs taken from ،These Days’ album is impossible, the writer limits only as many as five songs of fourteen from the Album.
In analyzing this song, the writer used a descriptive-qualitative method because it does not need variable. The writer used Bon Jovi’s cassette as the relevant source of data. After reading, listening and making record of data obtained, and also getting data of from Internet, she arranged the data, which is in accordance with the study. Having arranged the data systematically, she analyzed them in detail about meaning and the messages of each category.
The writer has found that connotation and denotation meaning are mostly found in the lyrics, figurative language as well as repetition, which explain the lexical meaning. And it is also found semantic relations and synthetic sentence which are frequently appeared in lines of lyrics as the expressions of sentence meaning, and coherent as one of aspects of discourse meaning is used. The messages of the songs are person has to realize about what he or she faces in his or her life. That there isn’t something we love will exist longer; family, friends, and even wealth. How things can change in a day, or just in the blink of an eye.
The writer suggests the readers, another researcher, and English learner who wants to make this study as reference or for further researches, they can analyze another style of music with semantic study or other branch of linguistic point of view. She expects that this study will be useful for developing the literature, especially songs. Besides, she hopes that this research is made someone eager to know more the literary works in accordance with semantic analysis.
