Abstract

ABSTRACT

By taking account of Searle’s theory of speech acts and felicity conditions, this study is focused on analyzing the speech acts used by the main character of Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire” movie.

This research is conducted using a descriptive qualitative method based on Searle’s speech Acts Theory. The data are in the form of utterances produced by the main character of'،Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire” movie. The utterances produced are analyzed firstly by using the felicity conditions theory including the propositional content, the preparatory condition, the sincerity condition and the essential condition. After that, the speech acts are identified in terms of the propositional act, the utterance act, the illocutionary act, and the perlocutionary act. Finally, the way the speech acts are determined whether it is literal or non-literal and direct or indirect speech acts. In addition, the research about speech acts used by the main character of "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire” movie is conducted with the following problems: How are the speech acts used by the main character of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” movie.

Data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulated research questions. In this field of research, it is found that types of speech acts used by the main character especially in the conflicts arise from ،،Hany Potter and the Goblet Fire” movie, are representative act, directive act, expressive act, and declarative act. However, commisive acts are not used in this field analysis. Besides, the utterances in this movie are mostly performed directly in which the form and function of the utterance match each other. However, there are also some utterances that are not performed directly. In addition, mostly the speech acts used by the main character of the movie are literal or what he says is exactly what he means. He doesn’t meanto say particular implication. And very few of them are in the form of non-literally utterances, such as some utterances that contains of idiomatic expression.

Finally, almost all of the utterances are felicitous or do not break the rules of Felicity Conditions. Only two sentences which are not felicitous, because they overtly deny the sincerity conditions. In this case, the main character is dishonest in performing the acts.

Based on the findings mentioned above, it is hoped that this research will be a fruitfill reference in the field of discourse. In addition, it is also hoped to the next researchers who are interested to investigate speech acts to fill the gaps in which the researcher can not fulfill in it. Furthermore, other relevant theories with more complete data sources are also suggested to be used in conducting research in the same area.
