Descriptive analysis on the deixis used in english in express broadcasted by Mas FM

ABSTRACT

Radio is one of the media that is accessible everywhere and it is considered effective to promote products as it functions as communication, information, education and entertainment media. To communicate meaning, context is needed. The study on words, utterance and sentence related context is done through discourse analysis. Deixis is a part of discourse analysis study that concerned with the meaning, which is inferred from a word, utterance and sentence.

This study focuses on analyzing the conversations of MAS FM English program using theory of Levinson, it is conducted with the following problem ‘،how is the deixis used on the conversations in “Express in English” program”. It uses descriptive qualitative method. The data are in the forms of utterances in the conversations between the broadcaster, the guests and the callers in “Express in English” of MAS FM program. The data are selected from the conversations from April Ito 30, 2006.
The data analysis shows some findings based on the formulated research question. The deixis used in conversations between the broadcaster, guests and callers in “Express in English” of MAS FM program could be person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis. The deixis mostly found in the data are when the speakers mention the participant role of reference that indicate person deixis, when the speakers want to show the location of a participant in the speech events that indicate place deixis and when the speakers want to show the time or temporal reference point that become time deixis. Meanwhile, the deixis rarely found in the data are discourse deixis which used to show a portion of a discourse ralative to the current utterance and social deixis which used to express social distinctions and the participants of communication.

Based on those findings, this research is expected to have some advantages, practically, to the students of linguistics in comprehending oral language. And theoretically, the findings of this study are expected to be additional references of discourse study, especially deixis used in oral language.
