Abstract
ABSTRACT
Whenever human being exists, there is language. Human beings cannot be separated from languages. It grows because of humans, while humans develop with language. Meanwhile, languages are firmly integrated into human’s activities. It means that language exists in order to be an instrument of interaction between human beings, in order that they can communicate and develop themselves. To communicate with other people, politeness is needed. As Wardaugh states that politeness relates to how we speak. When we begin to speak; there are three particular things that must be paid attention; what will we speak, with whom we speak and how we speak. Politeness strategies is the way of utterance used in conversation by the purpose of keeping the interaction between the speaker and hearer goes smoothly.
This study aims at analysing the Politeness Strategies on the Conversations in ،،Express in English” program broadcasted by MAS FM. Based on the background; this research is conducted to answer the following research problem ،،What are the politeness strategies used on the conversations in ،Express in English’ program”.
This research is conducted using descriptive qualitative method based on Brown and Levinson theory. The data are in the forms of utterances delivered by the broadcaster, the guests and the callers of ،Express in English’ program by MAS FM radio station Malang. The data are selected from the conversations in April 2006.
Data analysis shows some findings based on the formulated research question. The Politeness Strategies used in conversations of ،،Express in English” between the broadcaster, the guests and the callers could be positive politeness and negative politeness. Positive politeness or solidarity politeness is redress directed to the addressee’s positive face. The speaker desire in doing the positive politeness is that they want should be thought as desirable. While, by negative or respect politeness, the participant in the social interaction wants not to be disturbed and to be free.
Based on those findings, it is recommended for the next researchers to conduct researches on the daily conversations occurred in natural settings. In addition, it is also suggested to use Brown and Levinson theory on some other areas.
