Explicatures used in the titles of tajuk columns of Republika Newspapers

ABSTRACT

This study focuses on analyzing explicature on titles of tajuk columns of Republika newspapers using Sperber and Wilson’s theory. Explicature is a development of the logical form encoded by an utterance. It is context dependent, because it is part of what said. In addition, explicature is subpart of discourse analysis, which is related to text and context. It is concerned with interpretation deeply the meaning of utterances in written and spoken discourse or text. The utterances in written can be found in the title of newspaper. Title is important point in newspaper because it is a general or descriptive heading for section of written work. So, based on the background above this research on explicature used in the titles of tajuk columns of Republika newspaper was held with the following problem. How is explicature used in the titles of tajuk columns of Republika newspapers?

This research is conducted using descriptive qualitative method based on Sperber and Wilson’s theory of explicature. The data are in the form words in the titles of tajuk columns of Republika newspapers. The data used are tajuk columns of Republika newspapers published on April to April 30, 2005.

Data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulated research question. The explicature used in the titles of tajuk columns of Republika newspaper can be gotten from the three processes. Firstly, every data in this research must have implied meaning where it can be taken into process inference, reference, and presupposition. Secondly, the titles of tajuk columns were determined the right proposition based on context. Thirdly, the process enrichment by giving encyclopedic knowledge and adding in some words. From those processes will be found the distinction between what is said and what is implicated. In addition, the titles of tajuk columns can be categorized into three topics, economy, social, and politic. ,Therefore, to analyze them in a different way. It means that in interpreting the titles by using the concept formation around the metonymic use of certain department. Clearly, the three processes above are considered in metonymic use although Sperber and Wilson just use it in the one process enrichment.

Based on those findings, it is recommended for the editorial board who considers the explicature particularly how to get the explicit meaning when he writes the titles of tajuk columns of Republic newspapers. In addition, it is also recommended for the next researchers to conduct research on the daily
conversation and relate the explicature theory to other area, such as psycholinguistics. It also recommended for teachers to develop their knowledge in discussion of explicature based on Sperber and Wilson’s theory of explicature. Furthermore, it also recommended for the students of English Departmnet to get more knowledge and to better understand the explicature theory in utterances.
