Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study is emphasized in analyzing the optional phonological process ot English used by the main character in ،،Bend It Like Beckham’'. This movie was chosen because there are phenomena which are showed by the main character in this movie, where the main character her self is an India, but the setting of this movie is in London, and the language which is used to communicate is English. So, there are many miss-articulated sounds which are produced by the main character here.
Related to the explanation above, the research problems were formulated as; first, how are the phonetic transcriptions of English used by the main character in “Bend It Like Beckham"? Second, what kinds of optional phonological process of English used by the main character in “Bend It Like Beckham”?.
The data of this study were taken from the compact disc and the movie script of “Bend It Like Beckham” by observing the movie and movie script to find out the utterances of the main character, then the data were categorized into .scenes and transcribed into phonetic transcriptions. To make sure that the data of this study are credible, triangulation was used by presenting an expert in this field. The data reduction and re-observation also done in order to find the data were needed and to reduce the data which were not concerned with optional phonological process.
The qualitative approach is used in this study, because the data, in this study, are in form of words and phonetic transcription rather than number. The analyzing of the data used the rules of optional phonological process by describing the phonetic transcription of the utterances of the major character and comparing them with phonemic transcription to find out the rules which used.
From the research finding, it has been found that the main character in “Bend It Like Beckham” used the optional phonological process in her English. The most optional phonological process were found is the retroflex rule, and then followed by glottal stop insertion, deletion, alveolar assimilation and affrication, while the flapping and palatalization rule, were not found in her English.
Finally, some suggestions are offered to the next researcher to have to be more patience and careful in observing the object of the study in the same field of research. For the lecturers, it also is important to give more explanation and examination in phonological process, especially in optional and obligatory, which can improve the capability of the English Letters and Language Department of UfN Malang’s Students in observing the sound system of language.
