Abstract

ABSTRACT

Drama is a term generally used to refer to a literary form involving parts written for actors to perform. Drama can be performed in a variety of media such as: live performance, film (motion picture) or television. In film, the dialogue formed in a text that usually called script or screenplay. Because in the form of the text, the screenplay can be included as a literary work that can be studied and analyzed by any researcher.

In this thesis, the researcher analysis David Franzoni’s drama script entitled Gladiator viewed from its structure. The researcher proposes two research problems, as follows: how is the structure of the play in Gladiator? how does the structure of the play affect the quality of the play?

In the discussion of this thesis, the researcher tries to describe the structure of the play using Freytag’s analysis of dramatic structure; including exposition (inciting moment), rising action, climax (turning point), falling action and resolution. Then he will make a judgment whether and in what way the dramatic structure affect the quality of the play.

In applying his analysis, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative research means that he collects the data and describes it approximately. He uses objective analysis of the structure of the play from the theory of dramatic structure by Freytag.

As the result of the study, the researcher found that Gladiator had complete five acts of Freytag’s draitic structure, they were: exposition (including inciting moment), rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. They described clearly about the casual relationships between one event to another’s. It makes easy to the readers to understand the whole story and its meaning. The other result was the draitic structure gave the good effect to the quality of the play; here means Gladiator.

Finally the researcher hopes that the study of Freytag’s dramatic structure in drama can give ،،the golden treasure” to anyone who are interested in analyzing the story of drama; especially who want to know the casual relationships between one event to another’s.
