Abstract

ABSTRACT

There are some advantages we can take from reading a literary work. By reading literary work the readers not only get entertainment but also knowledge. They also know how the writer employs aspects of fiction in his or her story and get some lessons from the story. There are many kinds of aspect of fiction, such as character, plot, theme, message and setting. Setting is an element of fiction which refers to where and when the characters do actions, it also shows US about the situation and condition of the story. Setting cannot be separated from other elements of novel because it has role to make the story becomes lite-like and clear. Therefore, the writer conducts her study on the analysis on setting of D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatierley ئ Lover.

The problems of this study are 1) What is the setting of D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley '٨٠ Lover, 2) What are the types of the setting ofD.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley'S Lover, 3) What are the functions of the setting of D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover1 4)What is the relationship between the setting and the theme ofD.H. Lawrence Lady Chatterley ’٥٠ Lover. The writer limits her study to analyzing setting, the types and functions of setting and the relationship between setting and theme.

In this study, the writer employs literary criticism. She uses structuralism as an approach. Structuralism is one of the structural approaches in analyzing literary work that emphasizes its study on its text. Firstly, the writer presents the data are collected from the novel. Then, she selects the data based on the problems of the study. The last she analyzes and makes conclusion.

The writer of the study presents review of the TCidted literature; they are some theories about literature, novel, elements of the novel, setting, the relationship between setting and theme, structuralism approach. She also presents about previous study.

After she analyzes, she finds the setting of the novel. This novel also has a neutral and spiritual setting. Neutral setting can be divided into two, they are neutral setting concerning the time and concerning the place. Besides, setting of this novel has different functions to the story; they are setting as metaphor, setting as atmosphere, time as the dominant element and place as the dominant element. She also finds the relationship between setting and theme in this novel.

The last, she gives suggestion to the next researchers who want to criticize the other aspects of literature either intrinsic or extrinsic elements of literary works, especially novel. In addition, hopes this study will be useful for everyone, not only English Letters and Language students but also all of people who read it.
