ABSTRACT

Literature is one of the most creative and universal means of communication. The emotion, the spirit and the intellectual concurrent of mankind. The study of literature is divided into three big branches namely prose, drama and poetry. Poetry is one of literary work which is a collection of poem in general, epic/ dramatic/ lyric symbolic or one of piece of writing which has some interesting aspect to analyze, and it is often more complex from expression, when the author tries to create it, while we read and analyze it, we have experience of the actual life.

Puisi Cinta is the collection of the poems written by Kahlil Gibran and published by Ciipid in 2004. This poem book expresses and describes about the love phenomena of human life, while there are also some poems written based on the experiences and understanding of Kahlil Gibran on love in his personal life.

Therefore, the writer is interested in analyzing the themes and the messages in the poem book Puisi Cinta written by Kahlil Gibran. The writer decided to entitle the thesis ،،The Themes and The Messages in Puisi Cinta by Kahlil Gibran”. The problems of the study are: what are the messages of Kahlil Gibran’s poems in Puisi Cinta? And what are the themes of Kahlil Gibran’s

This study focused on finding out the themes and the messages, investigating and describing the messages in the poem book Puisi Cinta, by Kahlil Gibran. The researcher hopes that this study provided a contribution toward the literary study, especially on the theme and the message.

This study is descriptive qualitative research as it concerns with the description of the themes and the messages used in poems in the poem book ،،Puisi Cinta”. Related to the analysis of the literary works, the instrument is the researcher himself. To analyze the data, the researcher uses the following steps: First, arranging the data in accordance with number of the poems analyzed. Second, discussing the each data and finding the themes and the messages in each poem. Third, making tentative conclusion after presenting and discussing the whole poems.

Based on the data presentation and discussion, the researcher gets some themes and the messages in Puisi Cinta. The researcher concluded the themes in each poem are: In Rumah Cinta, theme is the characteristics of love; someone cannot affect another to love him by any gift. The distance cannot separate two persons that love each other and love will arrive at every hearts without distinguishing social level. Simply, love would not be affected by any condition.

In Cinta, the theme is the honest love that never asks more than the beloved can give and everyone who loves must be ready for the consequence that love not always presents happiness but also soreness in life. In Jeritan Cinta, the theme of this poem is someone that separated from his beloved person and he feels more suffering in his life every time he remembers the memory when they were together. In Waktu !)alam Cinta, the theme is the journey history of mankind and most people use time in order to reach their ambition in life than priority to human interest. In Di Kota Suci, the theme of it is someone who leaves his land to find the peace at another land but when he arrives in his destination he cannot find it. Finally, he is conscious that what he need in this life is lucky and to go trough his life honesty to get lucky. In Puisi Gelombang, the theme of this poem is a couple that loves each other and separated by certain condition but they are convincing that their love will unite them again. In Puisi Hujan, the theme of this poem is love that is compared with rain, as the plants need rain to grow, love also needed by human in this life. In Puisi Rindu, the theme is the condition that happens in daily’s social life when the love of a couple usually broken down by any importance, social status and wealth. In Sang Kekasih, the theme is someone who glorifies love and learns much from his experience of love. In Puisi Cinta, the theme of the poem is someone who feels difficult to express his love to in words.

The researcher found the messages of the poems are: In Rumah Cinta٠ the message is that love will give the lovers happiness from love itself. In Cinta, the message of it is that love will arrive at the heart of any one it chooses. Someone cannot force any one else to love him or her or to accept his or her love. In Jeritan Cinta, the message of this poem is that two bodies often separate for earthly purpose and live apart impelled by worldly intent. Love, however, can remain unite the heart and soul of the lovers. In Waktu Dalam Cinta, the message of this poem is that live is like a play on the stage. In Di Kota Suci, the message of this poem is that we should respect women. Men must be wise in seeing and treating women. Every person who trough his life honesty will get lucky in his life. In Puisi Gelombang, the message of this poem is that love gives someone the power to struggle and face all barriers and can affect him to do unnatural things. In Puisi Hujan, the message of this poem is that love can come suddenly without being thought before. In Puisi Rindu, the message of this poem is that love does not demand any thing and one who loves will not demand any thing from his lover. In Sang Kekasih١ the message of this poem is that once love has arrived at heart of someone, he will frequently expressed in words. Love also makes human wise to stand at attention in his life. In Puisi Cinta١ the message of this poem is that love is very difficult to be expressed in words.

Based on the findings, the research can be used as additional reference for studies that study literary work, especially about the theme and the message. In addition, he also hopes for the further researcher to make the same item but in different object.
