Abstract
ABSTRACT
As living in modem era, people nowadays think that information is a crucial need for them. The improvement of information media in this century has led as to know any information existing in the world. However, there is a great barrier, which likely still becomes a problem in transferring all information: that is deferent language and culture among human being. Maybe, who can solve the problem is only the translator. It is because the translator has powerful role to transfer the language into another language.
Nowadays, translation of scientific book is getting raised. It is because of the people’s needs to the foreign languages. Foreign languages are related to the development of countries, especially developing countries. It can be seen from the need of Indonesia, for example, to foreign languages, especially, English.
A country like Indonesia may not neglect what which is so-called translation. Translation should one of national projects of Indonesian government. The government must give good attention to translation because it can help a lot to get national establishment. By translation, people who cannot use foreign languages can easily use any foreign product after translating the clues into Indonesian language. This matter will minimize people’s fear of using and consuming the foreign products and because of this, it means that the country will be gradually developed.
One of the translation theories the translator should know is that of translation procedures or translation strategies. Translation procedures or translation strategies are the ways that are used by the translators to translate the source language text into the target language text. Translation procedures are the technical devices used to transfer the meaning of a text in one language into a text in another language.
Based on the explanation above, this research is aimed to answer one research problem, i.e., What procedures are used in the translation of phrases from ،،Nietzsche: A Beginner’s Guide” into ،‘Friedrich Nietzsche”? And, How is the appropriateness of translation procedures of phrases from “Nietzsche: A Beginner’s Guide” into ،،Friedrich Nietzsche”?
Here, the researcher limits his study on appropriate translation by analyzing procedures are used by the translator in the form of phrase that is taken from all chapter (1-9) of this book.
This research is descriptive qualitative research because the data are in the form of phrase rather that numbers. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative design in which the data are analyzed and interpreted based on the theories of the
translation procedures of phrases, then to know the procedures are used appropriate or inappropriate in translating these phrase.
The research instrument is the researcher himself as the main instrument. To analyze the data, he uses the following steps. They are (1) identifying the source language text and its translation version in the form of phrase, (2) identifying the translation procedures are used by the translator in translating phrase from source language text into target language text, (3) discussing the process how the translation procedures are appropriate or inappropriate in translation version or Indonesian version.
Based on the data presentation and discussion, it is concluded that in translating some phrases in Nietzsche: A Beginner's Guide, the translator uses some translation procedures. The translation procedures are divided into two main categories. They are structural procedures and semantic procedures. In the translation of some phrasal data in Nietzsche: A Beginner's Guide٠ the translator uses those two categories. In the first categories, he uses the procedures of transposition or shifting and addition. In the second categories, he uses the procedures of transference or borrowing, deletion and synonym. So, here the translator uses five procedures of translation.
In translating the phrasal data above, the most common procedures to use are transposition or shifting and deletion. They involve the replacement of the grammatical structures in the source language text into different structures in the target language text. It is done because the structures of the source language do not exist in the target language. Transposition involves the changes of plural form into singular form and of modification of head and modifier into modifier and head. Deletion involves the deletion of articles and prepositions.
Here, the researcher also found that there are several procedures that are inappropriate in use. They can be seen in point 4.1.2 data 1-10.
Finally, the researcher concludes that those procedures applied in translation above are often hard to be distinguished between one and another since they are combination from various procedures.
