The explicature of the headline news of Jawa Pos

ABSTRACT

Language is one of the most important means in human life. Language is a tool to communicate with others. Everyone cannot deny that they need language to express their thought. Understanding the language and understanding the context when the language is used in communication are separable, since language is bound context. It means true meaning often lies not in the actual words uttered and written, but in the actual meaning of utterance depends partially on the social context in which it occurs.

So, the researcher chooses headline news of Jawa Pos as the subject of this study because the headline news has vague term, some disambiguates words and the headline just vice the news content to make readers more interested. Explicature is aimed to explain and clarify the intended meaning. It is used to give more explanation and some notes needed to reach the intended meaning to make the readers understand more of the content of news.

This study is aimed at answering the research question: How are the explicatures used on the headline news of Jawa Pos? The purposes of this study are to find how the explicature used on the headline news of Jawa Pos and what are the topics used on the headline news of Jawa Pos,

This research is descriptive qualitative research. Descriptive because it describes the explicature used on the headline news of Jawa Pos and information the current status of phenomena. It sis qualitative because the writer observed and analyzed directly the subject of the study on the newspaper of Jawa Pos.

Based on the finding and discussion it is found the utterance of the headline news can be classified as explicature due to the fact that the explicature can be fleshed out. The utterance will be described in two or three steps based on the development of explicature: Firstly, explicature is developed in specification of vague term and word sense disambiguation. Secondly, explicature is developed in words sense disambiguation; the word sense disambiguation is not against with the utterance. Thirdly, explicature is developed in reference assignment

It is concluded that headline news have high level of explicature. The headline creator use the vague term to get more attention from the readers. The topic sentence of the content of news will be found on the one of paragraphs in the content of news.
