A study on code switching used by female sellers in Pasar Turi Surabaya

ABSTRACT

In society there are more than one language that is used, as we know that language can not be separated with society and every society has different language. When two or more people communicate with each other in speech or conversation, we call the system of communications that they employ on code. Code switching is the phenomenon of language because of the changing situation. Code switching may also be used between bilingual conversation depending on the person being addressed, such as family, friends and officials. This study was focused on observing code switching used by female sellers in Pasar Turi Surabaya. The research question were formulated as follow: (1). What kinds of code switching are used by female sellers in Pasar Turi Surabaya ? (2). What are the factors that influence the useof code switching by the female sellers 9

This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative method to obtain the manageable and systematic data. The participant observation became the main instrument. The data are taken from conversation of female cloths sellers in Pasar Turi Surabaya, when interacting with their buyers and who come from different background of regional language and culture. The subject of the study were female cloths sellers in Pasar Turi Surabaya. The analyzed data were formulated as follow: (1). Data collection, collecting the data from the conversation the female cloths sellers in Pasar Turi when interacting with their buyers, when their buyer different background of region and language culture, through taking notes and recording. (2). Data reduction, making identification and codification data. (3). Conclusion or verification.

Based on the analysis, it was found that the kinds of code switching used by female cloth sellers in the conversation is situational code switching. It depends on age, socioeconomic and ethnicity. Second, female cloth sellers used Indonesian when communicating with their buyers, a female cloth seller used Indonesian when they repeteadly bargain her trade when in formal situation. They also used Javanese language in their conversation. Female cloth sellers used code switching in their conversation with their buyers, by having inter speech code switching from Indonesian into Javanese and from Jevanese into Indonesian. They wanted to adapt the language used by their buyer, to be familiar, makes the bargain with them. Based on those finding, it is suggested to whole female cloth sellers at Pasar Turi Surabaya use code switching on their conversation continnously.
