Abstract
ABSTRACT
Bilingualism became the modem people need, not only for adult but also children. Childhood Bilingualism has been a worldwide phenomenon and much of adult bilingualism result from it. Franqois G (1982: 120) stated that the most children become bilingual in nature way, in the sense that their parents didn’t actively plan their bilingualism. Code switching was the result of bilingualism where an individual who is bilingual alternate between two languages during his or her speech with another bilingual person. Code switching may viewed as an extension to language for bilingual speakers rather than an interference. This study was focused on observe code switching used by bilingual children in Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur’an Al- Muhajirin Batu. The research question was formulated as follow: (1) What are the kinds of codes switching used by bilingual children when they communicate with other? (2) What are the factors that make the bilingual children switch their language? (3) What are the types of code switching that used by bilingual children?
This research used descriptive qualitative method to describe and analyze the natural phenomena of bilingual children utterance in Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur’an Al-Muhajirin Batu when they communicate to others. Qualitative research was done to describe and analyze the phenomena that usually appear in daily activities and it was not deal with number at all. The research instrument is the researcher self because in qualitative research she spent great deal of time to observe and take an active participation to find the occurance of code switching used by bilingual children in Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur’an Al-Muhajirin in Batu.
There were many kinds of code switching used by bilingual children in Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur’an Al-Muhajirin Batu, such as metaphorical code switching, situational code switching, tentative code switching, permanent code switching, and internal code switching. The kinds of code switching above was the effect of many factors, there were lack of vocabulary in one of those languages, when they want to convey their expressing emotion, they wishes to convey the natural incident, when they were in destruction situation, to compensate for the deficiency one of the languages that they used, they want to express solidarity, and because lack of awareness of language usage. The bilingual children also used some type of code switching that were intrasentential switching and intersentential switching.
From this thesis, my suggestion is that code switching happens naturally and it isn’t interference to language. To avoid negative sense to code switching, the people especially the teacher who as educator should think about the use of code switching by bilingual or multilingual children. It was so important to take care of the genuine in each language.
