Abstract
ABSTRACT
In daily communication, language is used to reach human purposes that enable them to interact and to cooperate with other, either in the office, market, school, or in the family. Language is not simply a mean of communicating information but also a very important means of establishing and maintaining relationship with other people. People tend to choose the strategies to have polite conversation in order to make their conversations run well and go smoothly. They try to make others feel calm and comfortable.
There are many factors that can influence the language usage and development, such as age, education, religion, district, sex and many others. In this study, the researcher analyzes the male and female broadcasters utterances contain of politeness strategies usage, which covers the use of two politeness strategies, namely positive politeness and negative politeness.
The design of this study is descriptive. It is conducted to describe the usage of politeness strategies of male and female broadcasters who hold the CLC program in Kosmonita radio FM Malang.
The instrument used in this study is the researcher herself by doing observation and interview. Observation has done to collect the data. It is conducted to get the natural and real speech by recording the presentation of both broadcasters in radio, and then the recording speech is transcribed. Interview is conducted to know further about the broadcasters who are as the informant of this study; it is also conducted to know deeply about the CLC and about Kosmonita radio FM Malang.
Based on the result of the study that deals with the use of politeness strategies used by male and female broadcasters, it is found that male and female broadcasters used both positive and negative politeness strategy. First, positive politeness strategy which is used in the condition in which s tries to minimize the distance between expressing friendliness and solid interest in H’s need to be respected, in case of getting closer to H. This strategy includes intensify interest to H, exaggeration, seek agreement, avoid disagreement, joke, offer and promise, including both s and H in the activity, and give gifts to H. Second, negative politeness strategy which is used in the condition in which speaker has the main focus on assuming that he may be imposing and intruding on H’s space by the use of be conventionally indirect,be pessimistic, apologize^ and passive strategy.
Furthermore, this study can lead the next researcher to conduct research on politeness strategy in the other form of linguistic works in the purpose of enriching the pragmatic studies, so it can broaden the knowledge in applying linguistic aspect in the various languages.
