Social actor representation analysis of HW in sexual violence case on YouTube news reports

The discourse of Islamic boarding schools lately is often associated with sexual violence. An example of a sexual violence case in an Islamic boarding school is the case of Herry Wirawan, the owner of Madani Islamic boarding school in Bandung, against 13 underage female students. This case has been widely published in the community through news reports on YouTube, a media that is very familiar to the public. This study aims to analyze the exclusion and inclusion strategies used by journalists in representing Herry Wirawan on YouTube news reports. The theory of social actor representation of Theo Van Leeuwen in critical discourse analysis is used to analyze Herry Wirawan in YouTube news reports. With a qualitative descriptive method, this study took data from words, phrases, clauses, and sentences obtained from the video transcriptions results, be it headlines, taglines, or news on each YouTube channel. The results of this study indicate that journalists used two strategies to represent Herry Wirawan on YouTube news reports: exclusion and inclusion. The researcher found 58 data which contained 89 strategies. In detail, there are 61 inclusion strategies and 28 exclusion strategies. The findings show that journalists tend to use inclusion rather than exclusion strategies. The most dominant inclusion strategy used by journalists in this study is nomination. The nomination strategy is widely used to get more public attention. In addition, with a nomination strategy, it will be easier for the audience to find out the identities of the perpetrators of sexual violence discussed in the news. Thus, the journalists are pro-victims and pro-women in this case.

Wacana pesantren akhir-akhir ini sering kali dikaitkan dengan kekerasan seksual. Contoh kasus kekerasan seksual yang terjadi di Pesantren adalah kasus Herry Wirawan, pemilik Pesantren Madani di Bandung, terhadap 13 santri putri di bawah umur. Kasus tersebut banyak beredar di masyarakat melalui laporan pemberitaan YouTube, media yang sangat familiar di kalangan masyrakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa strategi eksklusi dan inklusi yang digunakan oleh jurnalis dalam merepresentasikan Herry Wirawan di YouTube news reports. Teori representasi aktor sosial Theo Van Leeuwen dalam analisis wacana kritis digunakan untuk menganalisa Herry Wirawan dalam laporan pemberitaan YouTube. Dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif, penelitian ini mengambil data dari kata, frasa, klausa, dan kalimat yang diperoleh dari hasil transkripsi video, baik itu headline, tagline, maupun berita di masing-masing channel YouTube. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa jurnalis menggunakan dua strategi untuk merepresentasikan Herry Wirawan dalam pemberitaan YouTube: eksklusi dan inklusi. Peneliti menemukan 58 data yang berisi 89 strategi. Secara rinci, terdapat 61 strategi inklusi dan 28 strategi eksklusi. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa jurnalis cenderung menggunakan strategi inklusi daripada eksklusi. Strategi inklusi yang paling dominan digunakan oleh jurnalis dalam penelitian ini adalah nominasi. Strategi nominasi banyak digunakan untuk mendapatkan lebih banyak perhatian publik. Selain itu, dengan strategi nominasi, khalayak akan lebih mudah mengetahui identitas pelaku kekerasan seksual yang dibahas dalam pemberitaan. Dengan demikian, jurnalis adalah pro-korban dan pro-perempuan dalam kasus ini.
