Abstract
ABSTRACT
As human beings, children cannot avoid communicating with other people in daily life. Communication is important in maintaining and establishing good relation with others. It means, between sender and receiver or in this case is the speaker and the hearer should obey the rules that arrange how to communicate precisely. Therefore, this study focuses on analyzing the flouting and hedging maxims used by children in Supernanny videos. When the maxims are violated and overtly broken, that causes the sentences seem informative, well founded and relevant. It also causes the sentences have implied meaning and sometimes less informative. The statement of the problems in this thesis are (1) What maxims are flouted by children in Supernanny videos? (2) What maxims are hedged by children in Supernanny videos?.
This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative research based on the Grice’s Maxims theory, specifically in Cooperative Principles. Descriptive qualitative method is chosen because this research deals with words not number. Besides, the data were described descriptively in the form of conversation from the utterance of children based on the Grice’s theory of Cooperative Principle.
The data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulated statement of the problems. There are three cooperative principle that are; (1) Maxim of quantity is flouted when the speaker breaks using the utterance in the form of understatement and overstatement. (2) Maxim of quality is flouted if the speaker breaks the maxims when using the utterance in the form of irony, metaphor and rhetorical question. (3) Flout maxim of relation in the form of understatement. On the other hand, two maxims to be hedged, which are maxims of manner and maxim of relation. The maxim is hedged when the information is not totally accurate or not clearly stated but seems informative, well founded and relevant.
