Abstract
ABSTRACT
A psycholinguistic study is the field of psychological and neurobiological factors that enable humans to acquire, to use, and to understand the language (Carrol, 1985). Language acquisition is the process to acquire the capacity to perceive and comprehend the language by humans, as well as to produce and use words to communicate. Processing a language is an essential human trait that means all normal humans speak, and no nonhuman animal like does. The human language capacity is represented in the brain. In acquiring language, they may vocalize it in speech or manual as in sign. Acquiring the first language is difficult for children who have laxity like deaf or dumb children to acquire their first language by using sign language as normal children who use oral language.
There are some reasons that make the researcher decides to conduct this research. In this research, a deaf-mute character in Orphan movie uses manual language in signs to communicate with people around. She cannot vocalize the language, but she is able to acquire sign language well and fluently. This research also focuses on sign language acquisition which is taken from sign language description of Orphan movie. The researcher wants to know the way to understand deaf-mute character when she is speaking by using her sign language.
The researcher uses descriptive qualitative design because this research tries to reveal the psycholinguistic issue from a deaf-mute person who uses a sign language and the data of this research are in the written form without any numerous statistical procedures. The data of the research are the sign language used by Maxine in “Orphan” movie. The researcher herself is as the main instrument who obtains the data because it is impossible to analyze the data directly without any interpretation from the researcher. The data are analyzed by using Klima And Bellugi’s theory.
The findings of this research reveal that Maxine only uses one kind of sign language, named American Sign Language (ASL) as her primary sign language. She acquires her first language by using this American Sign Language. She uses some ways to represent her sign language, such as hand shapes, body languages, place movements and orientations, facial expressions, and finger spelling. Sometimes, Maxine combines some ways to produce words, phrases, or sentences. Those elements are used to express her thought in her daily communication. Oral language is not used by Maxine because she is a deaf-mute child.
