Abstract
ABSTRACT
Language style is the way people use the language to make an interaction or communication. The appropriateness in using such style is very important to maintain the good interaction. One of the related social phenomenon can be found in headlines of Jakarta Post, especially about SBY’s political issues. This type of issues can be seen as sensitive matter since it deals with the figure of a nation.
There are two problems of study; they are what types of language styles used in political issues of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the Jakarta Post’s headlines and how such language styles are used by them. To achieve the significances of the study, there are two objectives of the study; those are to identify the language styles used in political issues of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the Jakarta Post’s Headlines and to describe how language styles used in political issues of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the Jakarta Post’s Headlines.
Then, descriptive qualitative is the approach used since the data analyzed and described are in the form of words and sentences. The kind of the present research is document study since the object of the analysis is text in the form of newspaper. The data were taken by finding the headline news from the official website of the Jakarta Post. After that, the data were analyzed by identifying and classifying the types of language styles used in political issues of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the Jakarta Post’s headline based on McCrimmon theory.
The findings show that all types of language styles are used in political issues of SBY in the Jakarta Post’s headlines. The types of language styles dominantly used are formal and informal while colloquial style is rarely found. Formal style is applied since the news is related to the serious matter; that is politics. The characteristics of this style are long sentence, no fragment and contraction, learned word diction, and impersonal tone. The function is that the writer wants to make his idea clearer so that the readers can be well-persuaded. Informal style is used when the writer wants to keep the balance between the fact and opinion. It has the characteristics like the use of subject pronoun ‘I’, ‘you’, or ‘we’. The function of this style can be informative, affective, or both. Colloquial style is used when the writer wants to build a more intimacy with the readers. The characteristics are short sentence, many contractions, clipped words, less serious tone, and et cetera.
