Abstract
ABSTRACT
Studying the meaning is a kind of crucial thing since it is very important aspect in communication every day, although the way of conveying the utterance is different, the goal of that distinction is good interaction as human. Hence, studying about associative meaning has close relation with something in the society itself, by understanding the condition of the society, people will find the sensitivity of associative meaning. Moreover, associative meaning is unstable meaning that is might be different individual interpretation that may influenced by the experience of individual itself.
The purpose of this research is to emphasize the analyzing in associative meaning in written text in the Holy Qur‟an especially in surah Ibrahim that is translated by Marmaduke Pickthall. It is to identify the associative meaning in that surah and to understand well that the function of each classifications of associative meaning related to the verse. It is important for the Moslem to understand the real meaning of the Holy Qur‟an, because the Holy Qur‟an is an obligation reading for Moslem especially and for human in general.
This research is used descriptive qualitative method. Because this research concentrates to describe the finding of this research, it would be classified based on the Leech‟s theory of associative meaning and for the next the data would be identified based on their functions.
The results of this research are found the six kinds of associative meaning. They are connotative meaning that refers to the communication of what language refers to, it functioned to communicate the experience in the real world to associate with the expression when someone heard it or used it; social meaning covers the understanding of the social circumstances of language use, it functioned to deliver the stylistic style which appears in language; affective meaning shows the feelings, emotions and attitudes of the speaker or writer, the function of it is that communicate the feeling or emotion of the speaker or writer; reflective meaning concerns with the communication through association with another sense of the same expression, the aim in stating reflective meaning is that to deliver the new sense of a word ; collocative meaning is that the communication through association with words which tend to occur in the environment or another word.
