Code switching used by English Teacher in teaching English at Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Azhar Sumenep Madura

ABSTRACT

This study is aimed to investigate code switching used by English teacher in teaching English at PondokPesantren Modern Al-Azhar Sumenep Madura. This research focuses on two major problems: the types of Code Switching used by teacher in teaching English at Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Azhar Sumenep Madura and the reasons for the use of Code Switching by the teacher.

A descriptive qualitative method is used to describe and explain the phenomena of code switching used by teacher in teaching English at Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Azhar Sumenep Madura. The researcher is the primary instrument in collecting and analyzing the data. The data were collected from the observation in the classroom. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by using Romaine and Hoffmann’s theory. The results of this study showed that the kinds of code switching used by teacher in teaching English at Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Azhar Sumenep Madura include tag-switching, inter-sentential switching and intra-sentential switching. The reasons for the teacher to code- switching in teaching English at Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Azhar Sumenep Madura are “showing empathy about something, giving advices, clarifying the speech content for interlocutor to get the learners’ attention, providing equivalent meaning(s) and expressing emotion”.

It is expected for future researchers to conduct more various research of code switching, so that they can enrich more information about Code Switching and some phenomena.
