Abstract
ABSTRACT
Politeness Strategies are required in communication to achieve good communication without threatening hearers’ face. This phenomenon can appear in written communication such as letter. Letter can be considered as the language phenomena that contain of response, complain, and critic. In delivering the respond, people concern on the polite word to maintain author face. Therefore, the researcher chooses to investigate positive and negative politeness strategies used in mail letter Newsweek magazine. The objectives of this study are to find kinds and functions of positive and negative politeness strategies used in mail letters Newsweek magazine.
The research design of this study is descriptive-qualitative since the data are taken in the form of word, phrase and sentence of letter. The writer elaborates the data by using theories of politeness strategies: Brown and Levinson and her interpretation
The results of this study show that teen strategies are used in mail letter. Avoid disagreement, joke, and include both S and H in activity are applied to show disagreement through saving author’s face in refutation the argument. Besides, positive politeness strategies of presuppose, convey that S and H cooperator, exaggerate, intensity interest to H, seek agreement are used to show concurrence of the author’s opinion. The users employ negative politeness strategies: be pessimistic and be conventionally indirect to deliver their different argument toward hearer’s attitude.
In relating to the types of politeness strategies, there are similarity functions of applying each type of strategies. The users apply positive politeness strategies to minimize the distance in the relationship between the responder in accepting or refusing authors’ argument. Meanwhile, negative politeness strategies are rarely used to show disagreement since they prefer to avoid power domination thereby the message can be admitted obviously.
To expand the analysis of the next researcher who will conduct in the same field, politeness strategies in correspondence, the researcher hopes that the next research will involve the analysis from two sides: the letter of complaint and the letter of adjustment from other magazines. It will enlarge of the analysis in applying strategies from reciprocal conversation.
